New $1 Billion Plan Revealed to Transform Houston Astrodome. Is It Necessary?

Houston’s iconic Astrodome could finally get a new lease on life, thanks to a bold $1 billion redevelopment plan just unveiled by the Astrodome Conservancy and Gensler Architects.

The vision would turn the long-vacant stadium into a vibrant mixed-use destination, with four new buildings inside the Dome for events, restaurants, retail, offices, and even hospitality spaces—all connected by a sweeping boulevard inspired by New York’s High Line.

The project aims to generate $1.5 billion in economic impact and create thousands of jobs, while preserving the Dome’s historic character and making it a hub for entertainment and community gatherings at the heart of NRG Park.

The Rustic at 1836 Polk St is a go-to spot in downtown Houston for anyone looking to kick back with great food, live music, and a lively Texas vibe.

The space is huge, with a mix of rustic wood and modern touches, a sprawling patio perfect for groups, and a stage that hosts live local acts most nights.

  • Must-try dishes: The Rustic Burger, Texas Hot Chicken & Cheese sandwich, and Smoked Dip Duo appetizer.

  • Great for groups, with lots of indoor and outdoor seating and a casual dress code.

  • Live music is a big draw, with free shows on many nights and a great sound setup.

  • Creative cocktails and a strong selection of Texas beers and spirits.

  • Pet-friendly patio and family-friendly atmosphere—kids and even dogs are welcome.

  • Parking options include valet and a nearby lot (the lot is usually quicker and cheaper).
