FEMA Flood Maps May Miss Flash Flood Risks
A new report is raising concerns about FEMA’s flood maps, saying they often don’t account for fast-moving flash floods—especially the kind caused by heavy rain that can turn streets into rivers in minutes.
That means millions of homeowners across the country, including in flood-prone areas like Houston, may not realize they’re at risk because their properties aren’t marked as high hazard zones.
Experts say it’s time for an update, urging homebuyers and current residents to do their own research and consider flood insurance even if they’re not “officially” in the danger zone.
