Robin Berwick, the mastermind behind Double Trouble, has just opened Birds of Paradise (BBOP) in the Heights, and it’s already turning heads with its laid-back, resort hotel-inspired atmosphere and inventive drinks.

Housed in a beautifully renovated space on Studewood, BBOP serves up tropical (but not tiki) cocktails like the spicy-sweet La Bruha frozen drink and the dangerously drinkable Crocodile Tears Martini, plus a fun food menu by chef Jacob Pate featuring wings, a smash burger, and a Houston-twist Bikini Sandwich.

With a patio for cigar lovers and a strictly 21+ policy, this cozy new spot is quickly becoming a go-to hangout for locals, industry folks, and anyone looking for a little island escape right in the heart of Houston.

UH Archaeologists Discover Tomb of Caracol’s First Maya King
University of Houston archaeologists have uncovered the tomb of Te K’ab Chaak, the very first ruler of Caracol and founder of its royal dynasty, at the ancient Maya city in Belize. This remarkable find—the first identifiable ruler’s tomb at Caracol in more than 40 years—reveals a burial filled with pottery, jadeite jewelry, a mosaic mask, and other treasures, and sheds new light on early Maya connections with central Mexico, showing that these ancient rulers were already part of a much bigger Mesoamerican world than previously thought.
