Southwest Freeway Getting a $44.8 Million Makeover

If you drive on the Southwest Freeway, good news is coming your way with a big $44.8 million renovation project aimed at smoothing out potholes and making the commute safer.

Work started in April and is focusing on repaving all lanes, replacing old guardrails with safer barriers, and repairing key bridges—all set to wrap by Thanksgiving 2026 but keeping most work at night to minimize traffic headaches.

Alongside the roadwork, TxDOT is sprucing up the area near downtown with a beautification effort focusing on cleaning, painting walls, and managing the iconic fig ivy vines.

While some locals wish the beautification covered more of the freeway itself, the plan is to keep Houston looking its best as the city gears up for thousands of World Cup visitors in 2025.
